Tonight brings in the last of the Jewish holidays for the year, it’s called Sukkot. It’s very much a fun time with an onus on the biblical holiday. So what is Sukkot? Some might call it a simple harvest festival but as Jews nothing is so simple.
It is translated as the Feast of Tabernacles and will last for eight days. Sukkot is also related to the way the Jewish people lived while wandering in the desert for 40 years (Leviticus 23:42-43).

Today would have been dad’s birthday with tomorrow being my mums. Such a concentration of feeling. Visiting their graves didn’t cut it nor did lighting candles, it was the right thing to do but for me I want them. It's also my ex's birthday today. I remember a time when I shared my happiest memories on days like this. I don’t know how so many of you cope when losing loved ones, I guess I stay ‘strong’ because I have a kid and don’t want my tears to upset her. This weekend I will try to hide from the world.
*hugs* You might want to make a favorite dinner that your parents loved. Or a cake. Nothing big. Then light candles on the cupcake even... and talk to them. Get the feelings out, talk to them. Just because they are gone doesn't mean you can't share with them. I do with my father often.
Coping is hard, and I already know that I'll fall apart when my mom's time comes...
Yom Kippur

So last week we celebrated the Jewish New Year which gives everyone the opportunity to start again, wipe the slate clean if you like. Tomorrow, Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar gives us a chance to repent and atone, it will culminate in what is know as Kol Nidrei where we will fast and pray. Some will light special candles to remember and honour our dead.
For me it’s a solemn time but also a time of hope. Wishing you all well over the fast.

I am divorced. My daughter lives with her mum so all the everyday questions that a 14 year old has gets directed at my ex. The questions range from the typical ‘can I have..?’ to the ‘’what does this mean?’’ and ‘’can I go..’’type things.
I was going to say that my daughter can be manipulative as if she doesn’t hear the right reply from her mum instead of just leaving it alone she will ask dad! My kid is not manipulative at all she just doesn’t know better and I blame myself as she is growing up as a result of a divorce that wasn’t her fault and consequently ‘yes’ she has been spoilt but to a point.
Her mother is wonderful and as a result my daughter is showing those same traits.
Thing is, when she asks me a question, the ‘’can I have’’ type, I tend to procrastinate before answering as I weigh up the consequences of saying ‘’yes’’. I know full well that mum has said ‘no’ and that’s why she is asking me.
My wife and I get on better now as friends than we ever did as a married couple and pretty much discuss my daughters’ welfare simply so my daughter knows she is getting the attention and love that would be normal for a family living together.
I am seen as a ‘cool’ dad and revel in that but I am only as good as my last decision so I box clever and ‘procrastinate. ‘’I need to give that more thought’’ is a typical response from me before calling my ex to talk it over. Of course I only do this if the request carries a bigger or ongoing consequence.
I had no problem giving my kid a straight ‘no’ followed by an explanation when she asked if she could have a small tattoo. I find that explaining my answer helps her think about the deeper issue of what she’s actually asking and she comes to a better understanding of my decision even if she’s not happy with it. About that tat, she asked me this as when she asked her mum, mum just laughed and said ‘’ask your father’’.
My daughter makes me proud on a daily basis, but boy is she growing up fast.
It is said that the tighter you hold on the faster they slip through your fingers, a bit like gripping sand.
I have to agree with Pandy - I can tell that you are an awesome dad, and it's good to say no when you have to and mean it!
(And kids can be pretty crafty...lol)...

Today was my very first diner party and it went very good indeed. The dinner came out well and everyone was stuffed.
I started with the traditional chicken soup with kneidlach and lokshen (the kneidlach made with my own fair hands). There were six of us in total and they were very honest when I asked their opinion on the soup, not because they all said how wonderful the soup tasted as they would have told me there and then if I had over/under seasoned it. Plus I also thought I did a good job on it too.
Because the number changed from four to six of us in short notice I decided to do extra beef. This was so unnecessary as between the roast beef and the roast chicken I could have invited another six people. I supplemented the meal with baked potatoes and rice and also roasted some spuds just for a variety. Home made stuffin’ and mixed (boiled) veg finished the main menu as I forgot all about the Yorkshires. It happens!
The desert was a choice of an apple and rhubarb crumble (Aunt Bessie’s), fruit cocktail or New York style cheese cake, all served with either fresh cream, custard or ice-cream.
On hindsight I guess I did go over board a little but a fear of mine is not to have enough food to go around.
In the evening we had coffee and cakes including a beautiful chocolate gateaux that one of the guests brought with.
There was champagne and wine which was all brought by my guests as they know I don’t keep alcohol in the house and I have two bottles of both lemonade and coke now sitting in my larder untouched.
Needless to say I will be eating very well all weekend.
Most of the washing up is done and the pots and pans are soaking.
I’m also all done, just need to get the table back which will be done in the morning.
Sound wonderful! Glad you had a good time :). Cooking for many is something I rarely do, but when I was in school- we traded off on who would bring dinner each weekend- feeding 12 people in our class. It's tough to know how much to make.
You forgot the Yorkshires?! Great Scot, man! (No pun intended). ;P
My Papa is from... Bradford (or somewhere between there and Leeds which isn't far - as you should know! ;P) and he and my grandparents are always going on about damnable Yorkshire puddings, which papa tries cooking with disastrous results.
Apparently they're a staple-food in every pub. O.o
Oh - this sounds wonderful! I'm glad that the dishes turned out well, and that you and your guests had a great feast!

I have to say I've just come away from at least three admin journals all writing about freedom of speech.
Is this because a member has written something challenging the rules of VR? If so, why all the drama, why not just use the powers that Cancer has issued and suspend them?!!
We can't suspend them just because they say something we don't like- unlike what they are trying to say we do. However, Cancer can. ToS states, You agree that VampireRave.com, in its sole discretion, may terminate your password or membership, and remove and discard any content within the Service, for any reason... If they want to push the limits to see what he will do... well, they risk forfeiting the money spent on PMs.
I have just bought everything for a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings.
Having a diner party tomorrow I just have to think about how I will seat two couples and myself in a small lounge. I have a drop leaf table that will open out to a comfortable size but I think I will need to push my furniture back and hope for the best. I think a bit of a squeeze can be cosy!
I love tis place and only wish this lounge was a tad bigger.

I had to share that on Facebook as well :) Those are words anyone would find filled with hope and promise.
I haven’t been to the synagogue for a long time. I’ve had issues in the past with my religion but I won’t use that as an excuse for not going, I guess laziness and apathy won the day there.
Have to say that this post sounded better in my head and should probably have stayed there.
If we didn't question ourselves and our faith sometimes how can we grow? It doesn't mean we don't believe, just that we're at a point in our lives where we need to stretch ourselves and our beliefs.

Today I will be visiting the grounds. That is such an ominous sentence to start with, ‘’visiting the grounds’’. We visit friends and family on and off but they are alive, but these are the burial grounds of my mum and dad.
I don’t do this for traditions’ sake (as this is the time of year to be doing it) but because I have a need to be there. Be where? Among the bones and decomposed bodies? Strange life I lead.
I visit three to four times a year or when the need drives me there.
I will do this alone, perhaps because I’m unsure of my emotions. I don’t seek sympathy or empathy, truth is I don’t know what I seek.
Could it be a feeling of closeness, and a need to feel close? I believe I the Holy Spirit, but I also believe that is all around us. :) Thunking of you.
You're right, there's nothing there anymore... But those bones once belonged to them- and sometimes we just need to be near what was once theirs.

It really is a year for our athletes. This time it was Andy Murray (again) that won the US Open to win the Grand Slam. I really can’t think of the last time a Brit has done this, probably Fred Perry.
Rosh Hashanah is next weekend (Sept 16th) which brings in the Jewish New Year. It is very much a day of remembrance with families visiting the grounds of their departed loved ones on the run up to this holiday. It’s a time of reflection and resolutions, a time to look at ourselves. This is all the prequel to Yom Kippur which is a week later (Sept 25th) and arguably the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, it’s also known as the Day of Atonement.
On that note let me wish you all a very happy New Year.
We are indeed having an Indian summer this year as the temperatures are well into the late 70’s and have been all week. It won’t be till mid week that we begin to see autumn creep in with seasonal rain and cooler winds which we have become accustomed to.
But as always there is a thorn to this news as scientists predict the weather patterns will now include much stormier weather over the coming years.
If only good news would stay good.
We have an old Jewish proverb which goes loosley like this...
"Hold firm to good news as the bad will always find a way to surface without help.''
I always loved this.. It's a good code of practise to live by :)
The Paralympics

The athletes at the Paralympics have really opened my eyes they really are super human. It was great seeing Team GB seal third place in the medals table … I mean that was unthinkable two maybe three Olympics ago. Very well done to America and China, simply incredible.
They have really put my ailments into perspective.
With the closing ceremony approaching this weekend things will seem a little dull around here.
For what I seen of them in between runs to the hospital it filled me full of admiration for those who were in the competition. Full of determination..we cannot possibly refer to these people as disabled anymore.

I can’t believe I can’t find the only folder with all the private addresses of all my friends on VR.
Things like this happen to other people (I thought) as I tend to be on top of this sort of thing but what with moving house and a new job plus loads more stuff that has personified the littlest of things I concede I have no idea where that folder is.
With Xmas approaching I want to be ready this year so if you want to PM me with your details I will start (and back up) a new folder. If you want to add it to this post (for the world to see) I have no problem with that. New contacts welcome too.
There are some I will message individually to see if they still want to swap cards etc.

I’m lovin’ ‘I Player. Straight after the first episode of the new series I watched the Christmas special from last year (The Dr, The Widow & the Wardrobe) which was great as I hardly remembered it. Then they had an exclusive five min intro called ‘Pond Life’ which brings us to the first episode of the new series. Basically it shows how Amy and Rory begin to drift apart.. I know I watched them in a roundabout way but .. who care?!! Did I already say I love the ‘I Player’?
